Classroom Information

GENERAL INFORMATION
Welcome to Room 22's webpage. Our first days together as a class will be busy setting up our routines, expectations and responsibilities. It's so important for children to feel valued and encouraged to achieve their personal best. This varies from student to student and we'll work hard together to meet their individual needs. Caring for each other and ourselves also means that students are expected to consider the rights of others to learn and teachers to teach. The importance of following classroom and school procedures contributes to a positive learning environment.
We explicitly teach and model our School Values to assist students in becoming happy, responsible and contributing members of the school and wider communities.

MORNING ROUTINE
Duty of care begins at 8.35 am. Before this time children need to be in the direct care of a parent / caregiver or in OSCH.
Regular and punctual attendance is anticipated.
With teacher guidance, students organise themselves each morning and are responsible for their own bags, lunch boxes, readers, library books etc.
Our classroom fridge is available for placing lunches in clearly labelled containers.
ROTATING ROSTER
We use a roster in our classroom that guides where students sit, who they sit next to, their classroom 'job' and team for games. The two lists rotate one position on the board on a regular basis.
As the lists rotate, students have the opportunity to sit next to someone different, teams differ slightly, the jobs change and eventually a different team for games. (Except when 'on the corner' when everything stays much the same until the next rotation'.
While it may sound a little confusing, it works brilliantly and gives everyone the chance to work with every other child in the class. Feedback has demonstrated students really enjoy this experience and learn much about their peers.
CANTEEN
Lunch and recess orders are available every day except for Monday. Bags are available for purchase from the canteen.
We also have a classroom fruit bowl where excess fruit, if your lucky enough to grow your own, will always be happily accepted and appreciated.
SPECIALIST TEACHERS
Specialist teachers contributing to your child's learning include:
Liz Gehling - Science
Lester Halliday - Physical Education
Jenni Krasnoff - Japanese
Anne O'Dea - Music
Jill Woolley - Pottery
BANKING
The Commonwealth Bank provide a student banking service each Thursday with the contribution of parent volunteers. Banking regularly is a great way to help children develop their skills in money management.
LIBRARY BORROWING
All children are encouraged to borrow from our great Resource Centre before or after school as well as during our scheduled Library time each week. Students are given guidance in choosing suitable books. An essential part of our English Programme is for all students to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge and the 40 Book Challenge. It's our goal for the entire class to complete the Premier's Reading Challenge by thew end of Term 1.
HATS
Hats are necessary for outdoor activities during Terms 1 and 4. Our school has a 'no hat, no play' policy. Children without hats are required to sit in a shade area for outdoor activities including play at recess and lunchtime to ensure they are protected from the sun.
BRAIN SNACK
At APS we promote healthy eating. Students have a Brain Snack each day around 10.00 am to refuel them for learning. appropriate snacks are listed on the front of our classroom fridge. Suggestions include celery or carrot sticks, cheese, apples, bananas, plain popcorn.
Foods such as oranges and yoghurt tend to be messy in the classroom and are best eaten at recess time.
APS is a 'NUT AWARE' school with the health and safety of some students depending on our care regarding this requirement. Please be mindful of ensuring nuts and nut products are not sent to school.
HOMEWORK
It's important for children to develop a routine to complete any homework or unfinished work. Our homework focus is reading for 20 minutes daily, learning spelling words and times tables. At times, other work may be set or require finishing.
Your support in ensuring a quiet space, free of distractions and promoting positive attitudes is invaluable and assists in developing life-long learning habits.
PIGEON HOLES
Each student as a 'pigeon hole' where nots are placed, books are returned etc. As part of our daily routing it's the children's responsibility to check their pigeon holes regularly, especially the beginning and end of each day.
Diaries, Homework Books, Notes and other communications for home are placed in the student's Communication Folder to be taken home and returned to school the following school day.
OTHER COMMUNICATIONS
APS Newsletters are available online. In Room 22 students are actively encouraged and given time to record and use diaries for important information. Parent and Caregivers are also asked to use the diary or communicate via the front office student information such as illness or general information.
It's important for diaries to be signed each weekend.
Please use the diary to arrange a time or leave a message with the front office if you wish to meet with me personally after school - except for Tuesday as this is unfortunately staff meeting day.
I regret I'm unable to meet in the morning (unless and emergency) as this time is dedicated to meet and support the children to start their day successfully.
Volunteer training is a prerequisite for volunteers to work with students. Please enquire at the front office to register for a training session.

Thank you for your support and I look forward to sharing a happy and productive year together. I'm looking forward to meeting you, if not before, at Acquaintance Night on Tuesday of Week 3.

Regards
Maggie Holloway
