Week 1

Quote of the week... Mistakes are proof you are trying

Good Morning to you all...
Week 1 - Term 2

MONDAY 27th April 2020

Mathematics
We're starting the week with some revision using individual Question Banks in Maths Online. This means what you see when you log on, is unique to you. Each student is working at a different level. The questions are drawn from the tasks you were working on last term ok? Go to the Quick Links tab at the top of the page to log on and get started. Remember to do this completely on your own. If someone helps you, your results will not reflect your true ability and if you're having trouble then I won't know and won't be able to help you. If you make an error, I'll be able to see that in the data and know how to help you. Help me to help you by sticking with this and remember making mistakes are proof you are learning.
Literacy
Washing our hands... What does that have to do with Literacy? Lets find out...
The link below on  Handwashing  will take you to the information you need to answer this question and more.
  • Look at the page before you start.
  • Look for the title and sub headings - can you point them out?
  • Look at the pictures the author included.
  • Do the illustrations help you to understand what the text might be about?
  • Who is the author?
  • Read the text on this page titled 'Hand Washing: How does soap work and is hand sanitiser better?'
  • Listen to the audio file included on the page.
  • Spend time thinking or just talking about what you have read.
  • Go to the Quick Quiz and complete the 5 Questions.
Handwashing
Let's get started with Literacy Planet today.
  • Go to the Quick Links above and find the Literacy Planet button.
  • When you move your curser over the orange login button it will turn green.
  • Click on this button and it will take you to your log in page.
  • Enter your Username and Password that have been sent to your parents email account.
  • There are 3 Grammar tasks set for you around capitalisation - finding words that need a capital letter. We've talked about this a lot so you should all be experts by now.
  • Because this program is new to me as well, I don't know how long it will take you to do the tasks. Until we work that out, spread the work over the week.
Writing
Go to Pobble 365 on the Quick Links tab.
The story is called 'The Great Race'. All you need to do today is to read the beginning of the story, think about the questions that are listed under the heading and make a few notes - Question Time. Let's answer the questions tomorrow when you've had a chance to think and talk about them OK?

Reading

Make sure you have designed a page in the blank book sent home in your Home Learning Pack to record each of the books you have read. I will be asking to see these and so it's important you think about the design carefully and write it up neatly. At least one book is to be read each week. On completion of each book choose one of the following options:
  • Write a book recommendation for a friend describing why you think they should read it.
  • Describe the setting using as much detail as you can.
  • If you could choose to be one of the characters in the book which one would it be and why?
Remember to miss a line in your book and give your writing a neat title and very importantly, the date.

Mathematics
Your tasks await you! Head straight to Maths Online and look for your task which is called Week 1 - Tuesday.
Today's extra task is find and list 10 ways Maths is used in your house every day. Be creative and use your best detective skills.
Literacy
Head over to Study Ladder for a comprehension task called 'I Love Bananas'. Read the text carefully and answer the questions. Look back and reread the text if you need to.
If you have a printer - print the handwriting tasks: a and c, a and o, d and g linked. Print them all now and then do one today, tomorrow and Thursday.
Continue with Literacy Planet tasks.
Writing
Now you've had a night to think about the story 'The Great Race', grab your book from your Home Learning Pack and answer the questions from Question Time.
  • Remember to add a title to your page and the date.
  • Miss a line in between each answer.
  • Answer each question in complete sentences - no one word answers please.
Reading
Find a comfy spot and read your book for around 20 minutes. How is your book going? Talk to someone about the main idea.

WEDNESDAY 29th April 2020

Mathematics
Off we go to Maths Online - Week 1 - Wednesday.
Focus:  Addition - no exchanging or carrying. When you've finished your Maths Online task write out and practice 10 examples of your own. Remember to form you numbers correctly and be extra careful in setting out your work. (You know how fussy I am with this right?)
Literacy
Study Ladder: Tasks on initial blends and editing a text for spelling errors is your quest for today. Scoot up to the Quick Link and be on your way.
Handwriting: a and o linked.
Continue with Literacy Planet. There will be some Spelling activities waiting for you today. You have until Friday afternoon to finish them so pace yourself.
Writing
Continuing with The Great Race.
Rewrite the beginning of the story into your book and then continue the story. Aim to write for about 30 minutes and remember we're after quality not quantity.
Reading
Read for your 20 minutes - it's ok to run over time a bit if you can't stop!
Draw a quick picture of the main character - it doesn't have to be perfect but try to include as much detail as possible.

Mathematics
Hi ho, hi ho, it's off to work we go..... More addition work today. Go to Maths Online and log on to find your personalised task.
Complete 3 sets of questions please to make sure you really have it sorted! I'll be monitoring your progress online.
Next: Grab your dice from your pack. Throw the dice 3 times and write each digit as you throw it - eg. 426. Do this routine 10 times so that you have 10 numbers, all 3 digits long. Now write them in a list with the smallest number at the top and the largest at the bottom.
Literacy
Go to Literacy Planet and complete any unfinished tasks that were set for the week.
Handwriting: d and g linked.
Writing
The Great Race continued. Look at the section on Perfect Picture.
See if you can write or draw about what Emma saw.
Reading
Grab the book you are currently reading.
  • Open the book to page 10.
  • Find the word that has been used the most... what is it?
  • Which words were only used once?
  • Were there any words on the page that were new to you? What did you do about it? How did you find out what they meant?

FRIDAY 1st May 2020

Picture
Mathematics
If there are any tasks you didn't get finished this week, now is the time to go back to them and finish them off. Remember you can go back, view any of the tutorials again and complete more sets of questions if you need to. Remember we know the more we practise, the better we get at things.

Then....

Go to Khan Academy and spend your session working through the challenges.
Literacy
Create an acrostic poem for HOME LEARNING in your book.
Picture
ACROSTIC POEM
  • Write the words HOME LEARNING neatly down the side of your page.
  • For each of the starting letters write a word or short sentence describing or linked to Home Learning.
  • Make your page look absolutely fabulous using colouring in pencils, illustrations or borders.
  • Make a plan or create a draft copy first and ask someone to check your spelling before you start. We want this to be really polished ok?

Writing
Today we'll finish our work with The Great Race. If you haven't finished your story, now is the time to do that and to make sure there are no errors.
Let's practise your skills by completing the 'Sick Sentences' task - I know you can do it!
Reading
Enjoy your reading today, finish any unfinished tasks and then relax.
It's Friday and so give yourself a pat on the back for doing so well. Now turn to Mum or Dad or whoever has helped you get through Week 1 and give them a giant hug and a big thank you.

LAST OF ALL....

I would like an email from all students please giving me some feedback on how you went OK? What went well? How could it be improved? Were you able to be an independent learner once you got started? I'm really proud of all of you - top job for hanging in there!
I'm not 100% sure of how the timing and complexities of this week will work out but I'll keep adjusting things as we progress.
JOKE OF THE WEEK: Question: Why are fish so intelligent?                                                               Answer: Because they're always in schools.
